Weight Loss Surgery Vs. Diet Trends – Which is Better?

Adult with black shirt and jeans measuring their waist after having weight loss surgery

Adult with black shirt and jeans measuring their waist after having weight loss surgeryIn a world obsessed with quick fixes and instant gratification, it’s no surprise that many individuals struggling with weight management turn to miracle pills and impossible diets. The promise of shedding those unwanted pounds through the latest diet trends or diet pills can be enticing, but the reality is those options may not always work as expected

Today, we’ll delve into why diet and exercise might not be effective for everyone, explore some trending diets and diet pills, and discuss the merits of weight loss surgery with the experts at BMI as an alternative approach.

The Diet and Exercise Dilemma

Diet and exercise are often touted as the holy grail of weight loss, but they don’t always yield the desired results. Several factors contribute to diet and exercise not working for everyone:

One-Size-Fits-All Approach

Not all bodies are the same. What works for one person might not work for another. The diet and exercise plans that become trendy are often designed as one-size-fits-all solutions, failing to consider individual variations in metabolism, genetics, and lifestyle.

Lack of Sustainable Lifestyle Changes

Many diets encourage extreme calorie restrictions or the elimination of entire food groups. Such drastic changes can be challenging to maintain over the long term, leading to rebound weight gain once you return to your usual eating habits.

Plateauing and Adaptation

Our bodies are incredibly adaptable. Over time, they can become resistant to the effects of diet and exercise, making it increasingly difficult to lose weight. This often leads to frustration and a sense that diet and exercise are not working.

Psychological Factors

Weight loss is not solely a physical journey but also a psychological one. Stress, emotional eating, and other mental health factors can sabotage even the best diet and exercise efforts.

Trending Diets: Promises and Pitfalls

With each passing year, new diet trends emerge, promising revolutionary results. While some of these diets may help certain individuals shed pounds temporarily, they may not be sustainable or suitable for everyone. Let’s take a look at a few trending diets and why they may not work for all:

Keto Diet

The ketogenic diet has gained immense popularity for its promise of rapid weight loss through carb restriction. However, not everyone can adapt to such a low-carb lifestyle, and the “keto flu” can deter many from sticking with it. Moreover, the long-term health effects of the keto diet remain a topic of debate.

Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting involves cycling between periods of eating and fasting. While some people find success with this approach, others may struggle with hunger, irritability, and overeating during non-fasting periods. It may not be a sustainable solution for everyone.

Paleo Diet

The paleo diet encourages eating foods that our ancestors supposedly consumed. While it promotes whole foods and eliminates processed ones, it can be challenging to follow and expensive. Not to mention, it doesn’t consider modern dietary needs and preferences.

Vegan Diet

Veganism has gained popularity not only for ethical reasons but also as a potential weight loss strategy. However, adopting a vegan diet requires careful planning to ensure you get all the essential nutrients. Some may struggle to maintain proper nutrition, leading to health issues.

Diet Pills: A Quick Fix with Caveats

In the quest for a magic weight loss solution, many people turn to diet pills. These pills often promise to boost metabolism, suppress appetite, or block fat absorption. While some individuals may experience short-term benefits, there are significant downsides to consider.

Safety Concerns

The safety of many diet pills is questionable, with potential side effects ranging from mild to severe. Some have even been banned due to adverse health outcomes.

Short-Term Results

Diet pills often deliver short-term results. Once you stop taking them, the weight can return, sometimes even more rapidly.

Lack of Sustainable Habits

Relying on diet pills may deter individuals from adopting healthier lifestyle habits. Weight loss achieved through pills alone is unlikely to be maintained without other significant lifestyle changes.

Weight Loss Surgery vs. Diet and Exercise

Weight loss surgery can be a viable option for those who have struggled with diet and exercise. It’s essential to understand that weight loss surgery is not a quick fix but a tool that, when used correctly, can lead to significant and lasting results. Here’s how it compares to traditional diet and exercise:

Effectiveness

Weight loss surgery is often more effective than diet and exercise alone, especially for individuals with severe obesity. Procedures like gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy can lead to substantial weight loss and improve obesity-related health conditions.

Sustainable Results

Weight loss surgery helps reset the body’s metabolism and appetite regulation, making it easier for individuals to maintain a healthy weight over the long term.

Comprehensive Approach

Surgery is typically accompanied by comprehensive pre and post-operative care, including dietary and lifestyle counseling. This support helps patients develop healthier habits for sustained success.

Individualized Treatment

Weight loss surgery is tailored to each patient’s unique needs, ensuring a more personalized approach than one-size-fits-all diets.

Making The Right Choice For Your Health

While diet and exercise are crucial components of a healthy lifestyle, they may not be the right solution for everyone and may not always yield the desired results. Trending diets and diet pills can be tempting, but their effectiveness varies from person to person, and they often lack long-term sustainability.

Weight loss surgery, on the other hand, provides a viable alternative for individuals struggling with obesity, offering effective and lasting results when combined with proper lifestyle changes. It’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional at BMI to determine the most suitable approach for your weight loss journey, considering your unique needs and circumstances.

Woman in gray sweatpants illustrating how much weight she lost on a pink background. If you’ve been considering weight loss surgery but haven’t made the leap to invest in yourself with a weight loss method that REALLY works, Sleevetember may be your long-awaited solution! This September, BMI Surgery offers bariatric surgery at a discounted rate so you can finally achieve your weight loss goals.

In just three days, you can achieve jaw-dropping results with the help of our board-certified surgeon, Dr. Long, and his exceptional team. Learn everything you need to know about this promotion, including the who, what, when, where, and how you can take advantage of this offer.

How Much Does Weight Loss Surgery Cost?

Typically, weight loss surgery can cost upwards of $15,000, but with our September special, you can undergo a complete transformation at a discounted price—$7,999! This cost covers the facility, surgeon, and anesthesiologist fees, plus the first postoperative visit 10 to 14 days after surgery. It’s important to note that subsequent follow-up visits aren’t included in this discounted rate, costing $125 per visit. However, they are well worth it to maintain your results!

Lab work, EKGs, or chest X-rays aren’t included in this price, but fortunately, most patients don’t require these tests. We will let you know ahead of time (if possible) if you need extra testing. If you previously paid for the surgery and didn’t participate in Priority Pass (discussed below), we unfortunately cannot reimburse the difference.

Priority Pass This September

Located in Birmingham, AL, BMI Surgery offers Priority Pass, an accelerated weight loss surgery process. You can undergo preoperative testing and surgery in just two days, returning home on day three. If you live more than two hours away, you may want to recover locally for a day before traveling, but luckily, many hotels offer a discount for our patients.

Who: Body Mass Index Below 60

If your body mass index (BMI) is below 60, you may qualify for this promotion! While we can’t guarantee everyone will be a candidate for this procedure, you will most likely be a suitable candidate if you’re in good health with no previous weight loss surgeries. We require medical clearance from your primary care doctor for surgery and cardiology clearance if you have a history of cardiac issues. Similarly, if you have a history of lung disease, we’ll need approval from your pulmonologist. We’ll provide the forms…you just need to send them!

Please note that if we haven’t received clearance from your care team within seven days before surgery, your operation will be canceled, and the cancellation fee will be applied.

When: September

To get this exceptional pricing, your surgery must be performed in September 2023, a.k.a. Sleevetember. There’s limited availability, so if you’re interested, don’t hesitate to contact a friendly member of our team for more information.

You’ll need to begin a preoperative liquid diet, so consider this when selecting your surgery date. The duration of this diet depends on your BMI, and a staff member will cover this and other ways to prepare before your surgery.

Where: Outpatient Services East

All procedures are performed on an outpatient basis at Outpatient Services East. We’ve been performing outpatient weight loss surgery in this outstanding facility for more than ten years.

This facility is also connected to St. Vincent’s East, a full-service hospital facility. If you’re anxious before your procedure, knowing you’re a stone’s throw away from the nearest hospital often offers peace of mind.

What: More Details

Preparation is key, especially when it comes to weight loss surgery. To begin, paperwork will be emailed to you as soon as your appointment is booked and will need to be completed within 24 hours of booking. If not, your appointment may be canceled. Additionally, if you’re taking any blood thinning medication, you’ll need to come off this medication as soon as possible. Be sure to consult with your primary care doctor before removing blood thinners from your daily routine.

It’s important to note that there’s a $500 cancellation fee if the procedure is canceled or rescheduled within ten days of surgery. However, in the rare case that the anesthesiologist reviews your history and decides you aren’t a candidate for surgery at the Outpatient center, you can cancel the procedure without a penalty or schedule the procedure for same-day in the hospital (at a higher cost than the Sleevetember price).

Is Gastric Sleeve Permanent? Weight Loss Surgery Maintenance

Woman looking sideways while drinking fruit detox juice in the kitchen at home.

Woman looking sideways while drinking fruit detox juice in the kitchen at home.

Slow and steady wins the race. You may have heard this adage before and brushed it off as a funny saying, but it couldn’t be more true for weight loss. If you’ve tried losing weight with no success, you already know how hard it can be. Many weight loss gimmicks, like fad diets and juice cleanses, boast a drastic drop in weight, only for participants to put it back on right after the program ends.

Fortunately, weight loss surgery is an effective and safe method for lasting weight loss success. However, for the results to last, you must make steady, consistently healthy choices after surgery. Learn more about the importance of maintenance after gastric sleeve surgery from the experts at BMI Surgery.

Is Gastric Sleeve Permanent?

During gastric sleeve surgery, your surgeon removes up to two-thirds of your stomach, reducing your overall stomach capacity and calorie intake. The part of the stomach removed produces the hunger hormone called ghrelin, so many patients find they’re much less hungry after surgery too. Compared to other weight loss surgeries like LAP-BAND, gastric sleeve is permanent and cannot be reversed.

Importance of Maintenance

Patients with proper aftercare lose up to 70% of excess weight throughout the first one to two years. Not only is maintenance essential to steady weight loss but also for your health. Since your stomach will be much smaller than it once was, supplementation is vital for your nutrition. Let’s look deeper at diet, medication, exercise, and other lifestyle changes you can expect to adopt to live a healthier, happier life.

Diet

Before surgery, you and your weight loss team will discuss your diet, usually a liquid diet, for the first few weeks. However, once cleared by your surgeon, protein intake is essential to promote continued weight loss. We recommend 60 to 80 grams of protein daily, but it may be more or less depending on your individual needs.

Check out this blog for more information about preparing for your postoperative diet.

Supplements

You can expect to take a multivitamin and calcium supplement daily to prevent nutritional deficiencies. A multivitamin is an easy, hassle-free way to ensure you’re meeting your nutritional needs every day.

Calcium supports bone health, and as your body changes from surgery (and weight loss), a supplement ensures your body stays strong. You may take other supplements like Vitamin D3 or B12, but your doctor will go over your supplements in-depth with you before surgery.

Exercise

Exercise after bariatric surgery strengthens your bones and joints, promotes heart and lung health, boosts your metabolic rate, and much more. Right after surgery, you’ll get up and moving, and your surgeon will discuss a routine for the weeks following recovery. In the interest of maximizing long-term results, and per CDC recommendations, we advise 150 minutes of intense physical activity coupled with two days of muscle-strengthening training per week.

Support

After weight loss surgery, and every day for that matter, you should be proud of yourself! Even if some days are more challenging than others, you can rest assured you’re showing up for yourself. We offer support groups at BMI Surgery for those who’ve undergone weight loss surgery. Sharing triumphs and tribulations with like-minded peers can support your emotional well-being amidst drastic physical changes.

Discover a Life-Long Weight Loss Transformation

At BMI Surgery, we’re not offering a quick fix but a complete transformation that’ll last a lifetime. With years of experience, you can count on our team for comprehensive, effective, and personalized weight-loss solutions. And it doesn’t stop there. Weight Loss Surgery: The 5 Types of Bariatric Surgery

Woman's body before and after weight loss on pink background.

Weight Loss SurgeryFrom diminished self-esteem and insecurities to health concerns and discomfort, excessive body fat can harm your physical and mental health. If you’ve been trying to lose weight with traditional methods, like diet and exercise, to no avail, we understand how frustrating it can be. However, weight loss surgery may be your long-awaited solution!

At BMI Surgery, we make weight loss simple with safe, effective bariatric surgeries. In this blog, we’re discussing the five types of weight loss surgery so that you can learn a little bit more about each treatment and all the opportunities available to you. Don’t waste any more time on weight loss gimmicks; discover real results with BMI Surgery and start living a healthier, happier life.

The 5 Types of Weight Loss Surgery

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

Since 1967, laparoscopic gastric bypass has been a tried and true method for weight loss. With gastric bypass, the stomach becomes a smaller pouch and is then attached to the small intestine, meaning this procedure combines a restrictive and malabsorptive approach. In layman’s terms, not only will your stomach be able to hold less food, but also limit the amount of calories absorbed.

Orbera Gastric Balloon®

If you’re looking for a less permanent solution to get you on track, the Orbera Gastric balloon may be right for you. Your surgeon will place a balloon inflated with saline in your stomach to increase feelings of fullness and help you navigate proper portion sizes. The balloon inflates to the size of a grapefruit but is then removed around six months after your initial operation.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

Sleeve gastrectomy, also called gastric sleeve, is one of the most popular weight loss surgeries at BMI Surgery. It relies on the restrictive method, shrinking your stomach to about two-thirds of its current size. That way, you can achieve feelings of fullness with fewer calories. At BMI Surgery, we offer laparoscopic gastric sleeves, which reduces hospital time, recovery, and overall risks.

LAP-BAND®

Like gastric sleeve, LAP-BAND is performed laparoscopically and reduces the size of your stomach. However, as the name suggests, during LAP-BAND, your surgeon will place a band around the upper portion of your stomach, thereby creating a smaller upper stomach without permanently alternating it. Your surgeon can also adjust the stomach size by injecting more or less saline into the ring through a skin port.

Revisional Weight Loss Surgery

Lastly, BMI Surgery offers revisional weight loss surgery. While uncommon, patients may slip into old habits, resulting in weight gain and other complications. Revisiting weight loss surgery can reverse or alter any previous surgeries if needed. However, to undergo revisional weight loss surgery, you must meet specific requirements to ensure any weight gain is, in fact, related to surgery, not overeating. For more information about revisional weight loss surgery, contact one of our friendly team members.

Top 4 Exercises To Do After Weight Loss Surgery

Exercises To Do After Weight Loss Surgery

Preparation is key. You may have heard of this adage before, and while it doesn’t hurt to be spontaneous once in a while, preparation is crucial for the success of your weight loss surgery. This July, our experts at BMI Surgery discuss one facet of your weight loss journey—exercise.

Bariatric surgery helps you lose weight, but to maintain your new and improved physique, you must exercise too. However, we understand that for many of our patients, the idea of an exercise routine feels daunting. Don’t fret! If you have no idea where to begin with exercise, you’re in luck. We’re explaining everything you need to know about activity after weight loss surgery so you can feel confident as you plan and prepare for life after your operation.

Why Is Exercise After Weight Loss Surgery Important?

We’re so glad you asked! Exercising after weight loss surgery has numerous benefits, but first and foremost, it helps you reach your weight loss goals. Without exercise (and a healthy diet), you may not be able to maintain your newfound weight loss properly.

Additionally, exercise improves circulation, increases your metabolic rate, reduces stress, and strengthens your heart, bones, and muscle strength. And if you’re suffering from any weight-related conditions, like diabetes or high blood pressure, exercise may help you manage these illnesses. For more information about the importance of exercising after weight loss surgery, check out this blog.

When Should I Start Exercising After Bariatric Surgery?

Once you feel up to it, we recommend taking brisk walks when you return home. You can begin low-impact workouts one week after surgery, making sure to avoid lifting anything over 10 pounds for about four weeks. Usually, patients can exercise without restrictions after four weeks.

Even if you feel like the newest America’s Next Top Model, it’s essential not to overdo it. After surgery, your body is adjusting to your new calorie intake and exercise routine, and the last thing you want is to slow down recovery. We recommend always following your surgeon’s instructions and waiting until you’re cleared to begin exercising.

What Exercises Should I Do After Weight Loss Surgery?

Now that we’ve covered the importance of exercise post-operation, let’s look at our recommended exercises after weight loss surgery. We advise avoiding high-intensity workouts, like running and cycling, for at least four weeks after surgery. Remember, slow and steady wins the race in the weight loss game.

Walking

Walking is perhaps the easiest, most convenient exercise after bariatric surgery. Do it early in the morning once you’ve woken up, in the evening after dinner, or midday if your schedule allows. You can walk a few laps around your house or the block and then build up to longer, more challenging walks, like incorporating walking up and down hills. Even if it’s just five minutes, you can slowly build up your endurance and strengthen your muscles and joints with regular walking.

Swimming

If walking isn’t your thing, swimming is a great alternative. It doesn’t put as much strain on your knees and maybe more entertaining for some. You can tread water, swim slowly, and walk in the pool. And, if your pool offers any classes like water aerobics or other exercise classes, those can be a fun, engaging way to get in your daily dose of exercise.

Resistance Band

Resistance band workouts can be done in the comfort of your own home. You can gently stretch and practice different exercises, like lunges or squats, with the added resistance of the band to add a bit of a challenge. Resistance bands increase your flexibility and circulation, especially if you’ve been stationary most of the day while recovering. This form of exercise is perfect for those who feel ready to lift weights but don’t want the added pressures of exercising in the gym.

Weight Training

We recommend adding weight training to your routine as you improve your strength and stamina. Weight training can be as simple as light dumbbell exercises like bicep curls, wall sits, and tricep extensions. With weight training (and all these exercises), you can customize the movements to your needs. For example, you can sit while lifting light weights if you find it challenging.

When in doubt, if it doesn’t feel right, stop. You can rest up and try again in a few days. If you’re worried about your form, we recommend watching tutorials online or seeking the advice of a personal trainer to ensure you’re engaging the proper muscles while exercising.

At BMI Surgery, we’re here for you every step of the way. From the moment you walk through our doors to follow-up appointments after surgery, our team of experts is here for you. Weight loss can be challenging, especially if you’re experiencing other weight-related conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes. Between fad diets, weight loss gimmicks, and a whole lot of frustration, weight loss can feel like your version of mission impossible.

If you’ve finally had enough of these unsuccessful weight loss methods and are ready to feel your best, BMI Priority Pass may be your long-awaited solution. What’s more, you can complete your initial consultation, preoperative testing, and surgery in just two days!

Losing weight has never been easier—or faster—than with BMI Priority Pass. Learn everything you need to know about BMI’s solution for weight loss and how to slim down just in time for summer.

How Can I Lose Weight Fast with BMI Priority Pass?

The BMI Priority Pass is a quick, efficient way to lose weight. In just two days, you can undergo your consultation and surgery. In your consultation on day one, you’ll discuss your body mass index, weight loss goals, medical history, current medications, and any previous surgeries. From this information, Birmingham’s premier weight loss surgeon, Dr. Long, will determine if you’re a suitable candidate for the Priority Pass.

On day two, you’ll undergo your weight loss surgery. All Priority Pass weight loss surgeries are performed at Outpatient Services East (OSE) or St. Vincent’s East. Right after surgery, our team will be with you to monitor your vitals, check in on your progress, and answer any questions you may have.

On day three, you can return home. With BMI Priority Pass, weight loss is made simple!

What Are the Benefits of BMI Priority Pass?

Start to Finish in Two Days

We can complete your initial consultation, preoperative testing if necessary, and weight loss surgery in just two days. Our comprehensive preoperative assessment is designed to evaluate your potential risk so your surgery offers the best possible outcome. Dr. Long analyzes and assesses your results personally, and he and his team will be with you every step of the way.

No Previous Weight Loss Needed

With BMI Priority Pass, you don’t have to lose weight before surgery! Many insurance companies require a preoperative diet for 3-12 months before undergoing bariatric surgery. Luckily, our in-depth screening process ensures you’re an ideal candidate without having to complete an insurance-mandated diet program. You can say goodbye to pre-operative 6-month diets and hello to a two-day transformation if you qualify!

Hassle-Free Outpatient Procedure

BMI Priority Pass surgeries are performed at Outpatient Services East (OSE) or St. Vincent’s East by Dr. Long. With our outpatient procedures, you can expect less hospital time, less invasive procedures, and a lower cost.

Since you won’t be spending much time in the hospital, we recommend booking a hotel room to stay in before and after your operation if you’re from out of town. Many hotels in the Birmingham and Trussville areas offer a discounted rate for those undergoing outpatient surgery with Dr. Long. For more information about hotel discounts, check out this page

Weight Loss Surgery Prep: Our Top 5 Tips & Tricks

A notebook written with text preparation is the key.

Congratulations! Your weight loss surgery is scheduled, and you’re anxiously anticipating the day you begin losing weight. As you research and attend appointments, there can seem like an endless list of things to do before the highly-awaited day of surgery.

Luckily, the team at BMI Surgery has compiled our top five tips to make life after bariatric surgery hassle-free. We’ll discuss preparing your home and pantry, the importance of making your mental health a priority, and more. With these tips, you’ll feel calm, cool, and collected when the time comes for your surgery!

Prepare Your Home

Your home is your happy place. And while you recover from bariatric surgery, it’ll be more important than ever for your home to be your sanctuary. We recommend stocking your home with plenty of plush, comfortable blankets and pillows so you can truly relax and recuperate during recovery.

If you can, deep clean your home before surgery so when you return home, it’ll be sparkling. Mopping the floors, wiping the counters, and organizing your pantry can make life after bariatric surgery much more manageable and avoid any stress from an unkept home.

Follow Your Exercise Plan

Before your weight loss surgery, we often recommend beginning and maintaining an exercise plan to improve cardiovascular fitness, reduce the risk of complications, and establish healthy routines. At BMI Surgery, we advise 30-45 minutes of exercise per day, like using a treadmill, biking, swimming, or resistance training.

If 30-45 minutes sounds like a lot, don’t worry. You can work up to this time as you prepare for your weight loss surgery. And you’ll have the opportunity to let your hard work shine afterward. Once you get the green light from your surgeon, you’ll begin light exercise, like walking, as soon as a few days after your operation.

Plan Your Meals

We don’t mean to sound like a broken record, but when it comes to weight loss surgery, preparation is key. Another preparation tip is planning your meals, but only to a certain extent. If you’ve been researching bariatric surgery, you may have heard that your taste buds change afterward. This does happen. Some people experience no difference, and others find that they can hardly stand the foods they used to love after bariatric surgery.

So, to avoid a pantry full of food you hate, we recommend getting enough liquids, broths, puddings, and other liquids just for the first two weeks after surgery. For more information about your diet after weight loss surgery, check out this informative post

Invest in Your Mental Health

As you prepare to make a physical change, we recommend making mental changes too. If you’re undergoing bariatric surgery, you may have a complicated relationship with food. And while weight loss surgery can help you lose weight, it’s important to invest in your mental health to enhance the positive physical changes.

Whether it’s joining a support group, medication, therapy, journaling, or another form of self-love, finding what works for you before your procedure can help make the transition of life after weight loss much easier. At BMI Surgery, we sponsor a support group that meets monthly, so you have a place to share your experiences and gain valuable insights from those on a similar journey.

Take Progress Photos

If you look in the mirror daily, it can be hard to discern any progress you’ve made. If you don’t see improvement during the challenging parts of your journey, you can quickly begin to feel frustrated and unmotivated. That’s why we recommend taking progress photos. Before your surgery, our team will take some pictures, but we recommend taking your own too.

Consider taking before and after photos in your favorite outfit or something you’ve wanted to wear but haven’t felt confident enough in just yet. That way, on the good and bad days, you can tangibly see just how far you’ve come!

Unlock Your True Potential with Weight Loss Surgery

With your surgeon’s pre- and post-operative recommendations and these tips, you’ll be sailing through weight loss recovery. While the list of things to do before bariatric surgery may seem like a lot, you’re not on the journey alone! The team at BMI Surgery is with you every step of the way.

From your initial consultation to annual follow-up appointments, you’re never far from expert advice and knowledgeable recommendations. For more information about weight loss surgery preparation.

While CoolSculpting isn’t a solution for weight loss, it can reduce up to 25% of fat in the targeted area! Learn everything you need to know about CoolSculpting, and how you can tone up just in time for summer.

What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting, also called cryolipolysis, is a non-surgical treatment for fat reduction that assists in a more toned, sculpted, and confident body in just a few sessions. FDA-cleared for numerous areas on the body, CoolSculpting can help you lose fat on your love handles, inner thighs, back, arms, abdomen, chin, and more.

A popular alternative to liposuction, cryolipolysis can deliver outstanding results without invasive techniques. Before your CoolSculpting treatment, your provider will develop a treatment plan based on your weight, medical history, and desired results so that you can get the most out of this innovative, powerful treatment.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?

CoolSculpting freezes fat cells at sub-40-degree temperatures. After CoolSculpting works its magic, the body naturally disposes of the frozen fat cells through the lymphatic system. For best results, most CoolSculpting sessions are anywhere from 35 minutes to three hours, depending on the treatment area and your desired results.

Our team may also recommend multiple CoolSculpting sessions for certain areas of resistant, hard-to-treat areas of fat. Typically, most patients need two to three sessions to achieve a toned, sculpted physique. However, everybody is different, so you may need more or fewer sessions to achieve your optimal results.

What Are the Benefits of CoolSculpting?

There are numerous benefits of CoolSculpting in Birmingham, AL! Some premier benefits of this FDA-approved fat-blasting treatment include:

  • Minimal to a little downtime
  • Comfortable treatment
  • Slimmer appearance
  • Confidence-boosting
  • No scarring

At BMI Surgery, you can sit, back, and relax during your treatment. Many patients work on their laptops, watch a movie, or take a nap while shedding unwanted fat. It’s truly as simple as sitting back and relaxing—and our professionals will guide you through it every step of the way.

How Long Does CoolSculpting Last?

Since the fat is frozen and disposed of naturally, CoolSculpting is permanent! It’s important to note that CoolSculpting doesn’t prevent fat from reappearing in the targeted area, so we recommend maintaining a healthy lifestyle to maintain results.

Most people at BMI Surgery achieve fat loss from CoolSculpting that lasts upwards of 10 years! If you have more questions about keeping your fat off for good, don’t hesitate to ask our team questions.

National High Blood Pressure Awareness Month: Obesity 101

May is the national high blood pressure education month illustration.

Over 43% of adults in America are obese. Comparatively, nearly 47% of Americans have high blood pressure. But did you know they’re frequently connected? Not only can obesity cause insecurity and discomfort, but it can also lead to a worsening of high blood pressure, which can be life-threatening.  In fact, over 65% of people suffering from obesity fall victim to high blood pressure.

In honor of National Hypertension Awareness Month, the team at BMI Surgery is discussing everything you need to know about high blood pressure and obesity. Learn the ins and outs of obesity, high blood pressure, treatments, and more.

What Is Obesity?

Obesity is a condition characterized by excess body fat relative to a person’s height. Obesity is often diagnosed by the BMI (body mass index) Scale, which has four categories: underweight, normal, overweight, and obese.

Your doctor may also measure your waist circumference to inform causes and treatments, with a BMI over 30 considered obese. Obesity isn’t just a cosmetic concern but can change the way your body functions. It can cause heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and high blood pressure.

What Is High Blood Pressure?

In honor of National High Blood Pressure Awareness Month, we’re taking a deep dive into obesity-induced high blood pressure. But first, let’s define what high blood pressure is. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, occurs when the force of your blood running through your blood vessels is too high.

High blood pressure is known as a “silent killer” since there are usually little to no symptoms before the condition becomes severe. Hypertension can cause life-threatening problems like heart attack, coronary artery disease, and stroke.

Can Obesity Cause Hypertension?

Obesity can cause hypertension or worsen it if you already have it. People with obesity have more fat tissue than usual, which can cause complex changes in the body in numerous ways. These can include sympathetic nervous system overactivation, insulin resistance, and kidney  and hormonal changes.

Obesity-induced hypertension can be harder to treat and sometimes become resistant to medication. Since people with obesity often carry extra fat around their midsection, this excess weight puts pressure on the cardiovascular system. The heart must work harder to pump blood to organs, muscles, and tissues, which can quickly cause cardiovascular stress and other heart problems.

How Is Obesity-Induced Hypertension Treated?

Medications are available to treat hypertension, but many people with obesity are resistant to their effects because of the physical changes the body undergoes when obese. Fortunately, weight loss surgery can help treat obesity-induced hypertension. With weight loss, a healthy diet, and physical exercise, your heart becomes stronger, which can lower high blood pressure.

Weight loss surgery, or bariatric surgery, works by modifying your stomach size to reduce your appetite and reduce your calorie intake. There are different weight loss surgery techniques like gastric sleeve and LAP-BAND. Weight loss surgery should be combined with long-term lifestyle changes like regular exercise and a healthy diet to be successful.

Live a Healthier & Happier Life with BMI Surgery

While obesity and high blood pressure can severely impact your health, each of these conditions is preventable and treatable. Top 5 Things to Consider When Choosing a Weight Loss Surgeon

If you’re considering weight loss surgery, you probably want a surgeon with a track record of success. Beyond finding a successful surgeon, you’ll want someone you feel comfortable around and who aligns with your financial and communication preferences.

As you do your own research, you may have questions about how to find a surgeon who’s the whole package—successful, personable, and affordable. With these five tips, you can narrow your search and find a weight loss surgeon who will improve your life. At BMI Surgery, we’re dedicated to helping you feel confident in your upcoming operation. Keep on reading to learn more about what makes a great weight loss surgeon!

Check Out Referrals

Perhaps the best way to find out if a weight loss surgeon is right for you is through referrals. We recommend checking with your primary care doctor, friends, family, and neighbors about weight loss surgeons they have personally used or recommend. While these referrals may not be comprehensive, they can be a great place to start when you begin your weight loss journey. Similarly, looking online for reviews can be an eye-opening experience when searching for a surgeon. Once you find a few options, you can call each office and schedule consultations with the surgeon to better determine if they’re the right fit for your needs.

Consider Experience

As you narrow down your list, we recommend considering the qualifications and experience of your weight loss surgeon. We advise only partnering with fellowship-trained weight loss surgeons and those who are board certified in surgery. Furthermore, your surgeon should have performed numerous, successful weight loss surgeries and be able to provide you with before and after examples. Your surgeon should be an expert, whether it’s gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, or another bariatric procedure.

Evaluate Pricing Options

While it may not be the most exciting thing to consider, finding a surgeon that matches your price point is vital. Depending on your insurance, you may or may not be able to find coverage for bariatric surgery. However, some practices offer loans and cash pricing options that can be helpful when planning your financial future. At BMI Surgery, we provide numerous cash pricing options so that you can live a healthier and happier life while staying within your budget! And, with our hassle-free payment offerings, you can avoid the headaches associated with insurance forms and requirements.

Assess Communication Style

Beyond your surgeon’s success stories, you want to feel comfortable and confident around your surgeon. Some questions to ponder while you meet with your potential bariatric surgeon include:

  • Do they answer your questions in a way you understand?
  • Do they stop to answer questions or concerns?
  • Do they work with you to develop a plan for your surgery?
  • Do they respect your decision-making process?
  • Do you feel comfortable speaking candidly and openly with them?

At the end of the day, your surgeon doesn’t have to be your best friend, but they should be someone who respects your thoughts and feelings.

Search for Pre & Post Operation Support

Weight loss surgery is an ongoing journey. It’s essential to find support and encouragement throughout the entire process, and look for practices that cultivate positive and meaningful preparation and recovery. Many weight loss surgery practices offer programs like nutrition prep classes, support groups, seminars, counseling, and more. Finding others who have undergone weight loss surgery is crucial for your recovery. Those who understand the procedure you’ve gone through can give you advice that can prove helpful as you prepare or recover from weight loss surgery.
