Bariatric Surgery FAQs

Bariatric, or weight loss, surgery is an advanced procedure that alters the capacity of an individual’s stomach. With a smaller stomach, a patient consumes less food and feels full faster. Depending on the type of weight-loss procedure, the small intestine may also be targeted to restrict calorie absorption. Bariatric surgery is an option for individuals affected by obesity. It is often recommended for morbidly obese individuals who have not achieved significant weight loss through diet and exercise alone.

There are many reasons someone may want or need weight loss surgery; we will discuss the top three. First, and often the most important, is health concerns. People who are characterized as obese have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, and certain cancers. These are potentially life-threatening diseases and should be taken seriously. By resolving or reducing these health conditions, weight loss surgery can lead to a healthier life.

The second cause is physical disabilities. While this is closely related to health concerns, it carries different motivators. Morbid obesity is highly limiting. Patients may experience difficulties completing daily activities such as walking, sitting up, standing for long periods, etc. The need and desire to regain mobility is often a common denominator.

The final reason is the inability to lose weight. Patients who have tried diet and exercise to no avail may be good candidates for weight loss surgery. Not sure surgery is right for you yet?
